The object of these instructors will be to help you work at the piano in way that are rewarding for you, weather you’re an absolute beginner or an accomplished player. While the work level will be intensive, it will be tailored to your musical interests, and you’ll find the atmosphere relaxed and non-competitive.

Tuition Fees:

Each program is planned to cover the span of five weekdays. Absolute beginners (no previous instruction) are asked to spend a minimum of two weeks in Program A or B. The programs can be combined and taken on consecutive days (including week-ends) if desired.

*New Program: Piano/One Hand, being offered throughout the summer, is designed not only to explore the vast literature already available, but also to PROVIDE music for each student’s particular wishes/needs(arranged by the instructor from classical and/or American Song Book sources), this program can provide the tools and impetus toward real progress for students challenged in this way.

Both Piano Duet and Two Pianos, 4 Hands will be offered throughout the summer; our instructors are well-versed in this repertoire and we have a large library of 4-hand music. Students may come with a partner or we’ll try to arrange one; if this doesn’t work out, your teacher will function as your partner.

Class Meetings: Usually 3 or 4 per week; two to attend concerts in Lubec, Machias or Eastport, one purely social and another where students who choose to do so may perform for each other.

Facilities:  We have many pianos: among them, 6′ and 7′ Steinway grands, a 7’4″ Yamaha, a 6’3″ Baldwin, a 5’10″ Yamaha and a 5’7″ Chickering each in a private, sound-dampened studio.  All are in excellent condition, and kept tuned to A440.

Scheduling: We can accommodate sixteen students per week.  Practice and lesson time will be arranged to run consecutively (leaving time for other activities), extra or split sessions scheduled accordingly.  It’s recommended that persons choosing more than two hours practice time have some experience with such a regimen.

A typical day might begin with your 9 AM Piano Problems, Resources and Materials Class; your lesson and practice time may be preceded or followed by (lobster for?) lunch at a restaurant on the water and a round of hiking, site-seeing, whale-watching or golfing.  On Monday evenings we have a social, Tuesday and Wednesday evening we attend professional concerts and Friday is the student performance class where those who wish to perform for colleagues and friends may do so.

The Cello Workshop at SummerKeys opened its doors in 1995, utilizing the same basic precept as the original piano program: an intensive practice/study vacation for busy adults (who rarely have this kind of time to devote to their instrument during the rest of the year) in a breathtakingly beautiful setting.

Each day begins with an hour-long group class for all participants at 9 AM; The formation of ensembles is encouraged not just among the cellists but also with the overlapping instrumental and piano programs. For those selecting the ensemble option, faculty set up coaching sessions for these according to student schedules. Late afternoons are given over to group rehearsals.

Evening Activities involve a Social (Monday), a Faculty Concert (Wednesday) and performance classes (Thursday and Friday for those who wish to participate). There is no audition and no minimum skill level. Like the entire program — the premise is: “Come as you are to enjoy the study, the work and the beauty of our historic fishing village”. Absolute beginners with no previous instruction are welcome.

Please bring the following items to the summerkeys cello workshop if possible.

• Some pieces that you might like to work on. Please be sure to bring the accompaniment as well.
• A few of your technical exercise books like Popper or Shroeder.
• A portable music stand.
• A metronome.
• A manuscript book (a spiral or similarly bound book with blank music paper pages. It can be used with just a few blank pages.)
• An endpin anchor is essential!

SummerKeys Orchestra Weekends:

The Passamaquoddy Bay Symphony Orchestra (PBSO), though limited in size, counts among its ranks enough professional players and highly skilled amateur players to offer several concerts of standard orchestral repertoire each season in the Downeast Area.

To implement this SummerKeys program, the group and its conductor, TrondSaeverud, will travel to Lubec for the weekends of 7/28-29 and 8/11-12 to hold three rehearsals and a culminating performance.

Given the skill and patient enthusiasm of the conductor, this is a wonderful opportunity for all instrumentalists to gain experience in a symphonic ensemble. We offer this caveat: While the chosen repertoire will reflect the possibility of this being a new experience for some (and no-one will be turned away), you’ll be more comfortable if you have some ability and experience with sightreading.

Any instrumentalist is welcome to attend this program; those not otherwise enrolled in Summerkeys will need to pay our $50 (nonrefundable) registration fee.

SummerKeys Orchestra Weeks:

Due to the enthusiastic student response to the Orchestra Weekends pilot project the program is being extended to include two Orchestra Weeks, each being for seven (7) days. Designed to help students prepare for participating in the upcoming Orchestra Weekend, this program will teach general orchestral skills as well as helping with specific challenges in the music of that week. Goals include making an orchestra experience accessible for players who would not otherwise feel up to the challenge – and helping all players become more prepared and confident so that they can more fully enjoy playing in the orchestra. The week begins with a lecture presentation by the conductor, discussing differences between practicing solo works and preparing for orchestra, giving practical advice on how to prepare parts, where to focus energy, what not to spend time on. His main message is that our goal is to create an enjoyable and exciting experience, not to play all the notes! In this comprehensive, full-time program, students will receive: daily individual lessons on your part from professional players (including Saeverud) with extensive and varied orchestral experience; daily group rehearsals conducted by Saeverud; CD recordings of the music; “practice map” for each piece, identifying sections that need extra attention (e.g., where your instrument has the melody), as well as pointing out passages that are less important to learn perfectly – and suggestions for simplifying your part, dealing with long rests, repeats, etc.

This program incurs an extra fee since participants will enroll not just for the usual five-day week, but also for the Orchestra Weekend that follows which this year will be the weekends of July 28-29 and August 11-12. To justify the cost please note that a participant is getting more than double the faculty time of any other program offered at SummerKeys.

Spend a week of hands-on learning and location photography with award-winning husband and wife photographer-authors Frank Van Riper and Judith Goodman. Working from their stunning home in west Lubec overlooking Morrison Cove, Frank and Judy will cover basics of portraiture, landscape and documentary photography during morning instruction, followed by assignments in multiple locations including Quoddy Head State Park, Campobello Island, NB and the colorful town of Lubec itself. Daily critiques and one-on-one instruction. Minimum age for attendance is 16. Single-digit class size assures personal instruction. Students must supply their own digital camera.

Piano Privilege gives skilled pianists an opportunity to coach and perform a pre-chosen work with a member of the faculty. To participate in this program approval is required from the SummerKeys director, Bruce Potterton.** The week in attendance at SummerKeys will include practice time, two lessons with the piano teacher, and three lessons playing with the faculty member to be accompanied. There are master classes three times a week and the student can perform the selected piece on Friday night for colleagues and friends.

Piano Concerto Privilege 2012 Workshops at SummerKeys

Piano Concerto Privilege gives the first three qualified pianists to apply and be approved by the SummerKeys director, Bruce Potterton**, the opportunity to rehearse and perform a concerto movement with the Passamaquoddy Bay Symphony Orchestra. There will be a selected list of piano concerto slow movements from which the participants to choose. The music will be decided on and worked on by the student prior to the the dates selected to attend SummerKeys. The student will be working with and coached by faculty of their choice. There are three Orchestra Weekends in which to participate. The pianist choosing to attend Orchestra Week you will have seven days of instruction and coaching in the skills needed for orchestral playing and performance.

This workshop is for singers of all levels continuing their studies. Program consists of a daily group class, five 60-minute lessons weekly, two hours daily practice and listening, coaching sessions for duet/trios. For this workshop, Mr. Ferguson welcomes all ages and all experiences; he believes that a healthy approach to singing can be applied to any style of music.

The week-long workshop begins on Sunday evening with an informal get together of those participating in the voice program. Schedules will be distributed and questions answered. The week will end with a Friday late afternoon/early evening performance class and reception.

The Violin/Viola Workshops began during the 1997 season under the same basic precept as the original piano and cello programs: an intensive practice/study vacation for busy adult amateurs (who rarely have this kind of time to devote to their instrument during the rest of the year) in a breathtakingly beautiful setting on the Maine coast, with half of each day free for sightseeing, etc. We’re adding more weeks to our string programs, with the goal of offering expanded opportunities for ensemble to all those participants who want this.

Adult violists at any level are welcome. An absolute beginner with no previous instruction would be encouraged to attend more than one week.

Each day begins with an hour-long group class for all viola students at 9 AM; those assigned the morning ‘shift’ that day then continue with two hours of practice, Afternoon students are free until 2:30.

Coached ensembles are encouraged, not just among the violinists and violists, but also with the overlapping programs (piano and/or flute, clarinet, guitar, and cello). Faculty sets up coaching sessions for ensembles according to student schedules. Late afternoons are given over to group rehearsals.

Evening activities involve a social (Mondays), a faculty concert (Wednesdays) and performance classes (Thursdays and Fridays) for those who wish to participate.

Beginners through Advanced
“Comeback players especially welcome!”

The week-long workshop provides:

1. A daily (Monday-Friday) 45-60 minute private lesson(instructor will decide).
2. A 60-minute daily group class.
3. Two hours of scheduled practice time in a private studio each day for each student.
4. Coached ensemble and chamber music is optional. This is an opportunity for interaction with pianists and other instrumentalists.

The work we do will be tailored to the needs and interests of each student, but in general will emphasize 1. the development of natural tone production and solid technique, applicable to all styles of playing, 2. effective warmup, practice, and problem solving techniques (including concerns about performance anxiety), and 3. a stylistically informed approach to literature.

Whether you want to play solos and hymns in church, perform with a brass quintet or jazz band, or be a better section player in a concert band or orchestra, our program can help you reach your goal.

Please bring the following items to the Summerkeys trumpet workshop if possible:

• Exercise and etude books.
• Any solo piece or coached ensemble you’d like to perform.
• A portable music stand.
• A metronome.
• A notebook.
• Cleaning and lubrication supplies sufficient for the week.
