Tuition: $920

Cabaret is an intimate musical art form, in which a performer puts his or her personal stamp on a song through honest exploration of the lyric. Students do not need to know how to read music, nor do they need to have taken voice lessons or studied acting to participate in the Cabaret Workshop. Practitioners of other theatrical and musical genres who are interested in exploring the unique art form of cabaret are welcome! Cabaret Workshop meets 5 times per week, the class length to be determined by the number of students who enroll (we want to give each student 15 minutes– ideally 20 minutes– of stage time each session). We use a master-class format, with each student working and coaching in front of peers.

Each student should bring sheet music to at least 5 songs she/he knows well and would be psyched to perform. In an non threatening and supportive environment, students will sing through their repertoire, working on interpretation of lyrics; phrasing and musicality; acting/presentation; and making songs his/her own. By midweek, students will choose 2-3 songs to prepare for the Friday showcase.

The last part of the week will be spent working closely with each student to get their chosen songs up to performance level, as well as devising patter to introduce the songs. There will be a mini-showcase at the end of each week; those students who take both weeks can participate in both showcases.

I just finished taking the Brooklyn Cabaret Workshop right here in Park Slope and wanted to highly recommend it to others who sing, or enjoy singing, even if you have no formal training whatsoever. The co-teachers, Jennie and David, were amazing at helping each of us find our personal connection to a song. And learning to sing with an accompanist instead of a recording, was a great experience – and lots of fun. It was also a small class and very supportive, which was helpful for many of us first-time cabaret singers.

You have taught me more, quantity and quality-wise than anyone ever has before in my 59 years! This has been an outstanding year!
