Peter Lewy
Peter Lewy has served as principle cellist and concerto soloist with numerous New York City metropolitan orchestras including the Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra, the Regina Opera Orchestra, the Bronx Symphony and the Greenwich Village Orchestra. He has also made recital and chamber music appearances at all the major venues in NYC including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. In addition, Mr. Lewy has worked on stage and in the recording studio with hundreds of recording artists. His innovative uses of the cello in popular music recordings and performances have earned him critical acclaim in the New York Times and Variety Magazine. Mr. Lewy’s solo debut CD, Now and Then (Classical Jazz Records) features seven of his own works for solo cello as well as the full Bach Suite #1 in G Major for unaccompanied cello. His 2nd CD, Some Other Way on the same label, includes further original works as well as renditions of works by several contemporary songwriters. His music has been heard on radio stations throughout the U.S., Europe and the far east. A caring and enthusiastic teacher, Mr. Lewy has been on the faculties of several NYC music schools including 27 years at the United Nations International School and remains at the Rockland Conservatory of Music. He also serves as co-director of the Maplewood Chamber Music Workshop. He was head of the string department at Camp Encore/Coda in Sweden, Maine for nine years, and founded the Cello Workshop at SummerKeys.
